Everybody has certain verbal and nonverbal cues that indicate how they feel. Very rarely do people come right out and tell someone about their deepest emotional states. On has to learn how to interpret these nonverbal signals. Doing so is is the key to how to know if a shy woman is interested in a man.
But perhaps, rather than spending too much time obsessing over these nonverbal signals, if you are the man in question, you should take the initiative. If you are successful, it will become obvious whether the woman is interested in you or not.
How should you do this? By making conversation. If you are in a public place and have laid eyes on the woman for the first time, this usually starts with an opening line.
"An opening line?" you ask, "Aren't these cutesy or flippant?" Not necessarily. Indeed, the straightforward approach is the best, according to a study involving 1000 women conducted by psychologist Chris Kleinke. (Another study by psychologist Charlene Muehlenhard of Texas A&M University bears out Kleinke's findings among men). These are the opening lines rated as the best:
“Hi.”
“I feel a little embarrassed about this, but I’d like to meet you.”
“Do you want to dance?”
“That’s a very nice dress you have on.”
“Can I buy you lunch?”
Smug or flippant lines were rated as the biggest turn-off, these heading the list:
“You remind me of a woman I used to date.”
“Bet I can outdrink you.”
“I play the field and I think I just hit a home run with you.”
“Your place or mine?”
By the way, Muehlenhard also found that women were turned off by men who kept pestering them for dates after they politely turned them down.
