I have always been the one my friends turn to for advice, support and counselling; one described me as "a wise owl".
I believe the four As to discovering yourself and finding your way to true happiness are:
Analysis, Acknowledgement, Acceptance, Action
I focus on the final step: Action, because without doing something, taking positive action we cannot effect change.
I have studied counselling, but more importantly I've had life experiences:
married at 19, divorced at 23
at age 32 I was told I couldn't have children
within 7 years my brother and parents died from long-term illnesses
I have survived cancer
Having cancer changed my perspective on life; all the usual things I had considered problems were dwarfed in comparison. I learned that it isn't so much what happens to us in life, but how we react to it that's important.
I learned what happiness really is. This realisation led me to write, How to be Happy: A Practical Guide.
My philosophy is: we only have One Life so it's important we live it well.
One life; a little gleam of time between two eternities;
no second chance for us for evermore.
- Carlyle
This is the philosophy behind OneActOnly.com
We only have One Life so it's important to live it well.
Frame your mind to mirth and merriment,
which bars a thousand harms and lengthens life.
- Shakespeare
To be happy you must first make the decisionto be happy.
The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.
- Franklin D Roosevelt
The only person who can stop you doing all the things you want to, is You;
and the only thing that can stop you is your fear.
It ain't no use puttin' up your umbrella 'til it rains.
- Alice Hegan
Anticipated Dismay - Don't worry about things before they happen.
The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation.
Why should we be in such desperate haste to succeed?
If a man does not keep pace with his companions,
perhaps itis because he hears a different drummer.
Let him step to the music which he hears,
however measured or far away.
- Henry David Thoreau, Walden
