Women And Weight Gain:What Changes You Need To Make Between 35-55
The proverbial conversation: women and weight gain. It eventually seems to be
the topic of conversation at every event I go: grocery store shopping, clothes
buying, sports events, weddings, birthday parties, class reunions....at some point,
our weight comes up. Or our lack of control over it I should say. We quietly ask
each other: why are we gaining weight? I am not eating more, and when I try my
"trusted and true fix" that has always worked before.....is NOT working now.
What can you do about it? Is there some secret out there that others know and I
don't? You ask your slimmer friends what they are doing about it. And they are
saying: nothing different...just eating healthy and keeping active. They say they
are still doing the gym weights 2 to 3 times a week and perhaps a walk or
two.....nothing extraordinary.
Seems too simplistic, doesn't it? But that is exactly what the body is looking for!
It wants consistency in the exercise department in order to keep the muscle mass
it has. As we learned in my last article: Women and Weight Gain: Discover How
Not To Gain As You Age you learned the mechanics of calorie burning and how to
burn more.
In this issue we will address the food changes we need to make in order NOT to
gain as we go through the peri-menopausal and menopausal years. In fact, most
of us will be surprised that this article started at age 35 since many women today
are having babies into their 40's. True, you can still menstruate, have children,
and still be peri-menopausal. Just because our life styles are different in today's
world and we think differently, doesn't mean our body functions differently.
Think about it: your heart beats the same, your breath is the same, you walk the
same, your hormones are the same....as they always were. How you try to
manipulate them is what is different. And that is the big stumbling block.
Most women start to diet around this time of their life. They got the baby weight
off and don't understand why the same things are not working. There is no way
you are thinking you are peri-menopausal at 35. That is just not on your radar
screen. That is for women over 40 for sure. But, in reality, that is where our
bodies start to make gradual changes.
According to Debra Waterhouse, M.P.H.,R.D. here are 3 things you can do to
prevent weight gain during your peri-menopausal years:
1. Stop Dieting. It will only make things worse.
2. Exercise to combat menopausal gains. Learn which exercises Debra
Waterhouse says work in her book: "The Midlife Fat Cell".
3. Your Attitude: Menopause is not a disease, it's a natural transition of a
women's body. It will change your thinking and your actions.
If you want to be pro-active about your health and life transitions, definitely take
a look at Debra Waterhouse books. She has a wealth of information and explains
it to us in a language we can understand.
