Yes, the reason why some people suffer from perpetual ill-luck is because it is the effect of their past life’s karma. And those whose past karmas were good will be born with a silver spoon and enjoy a good life in this birth. It is our karma that takes us to the place where our rebirth is to take place.
Everyone Reaps the Fruits of Karma Depending Upon Their Own Deeds
Everything we encounter is our own design. It’s we who are responsible for it. Each person is responsible for himself. God has never interfered in this. ‘Give what you would want to receive’ - this is the principle of karma. The whole world is nothing but the principle of karma. Hence, everything is our own projection.
One’s Inner Intent is What Binds Karma
Basically, our intention of giving happiness to others binds good karma and our intention that of hurting others will bind bad karmas. The external actions may be good or bad. But if the motive behind an action is selfish, it will bind bad karma. Bad karmas bring unhappiness. If there is no selfish intent, then we will bind good karma. Good karmas bring happiness. So what causes bondage of karmas is our inner intent. We must always remain aware of our inner intent!
Never Spoil the Inner Intent
Our external acts are effects of our past life’s intents. It can very much happen that the karma unfolding presently may be good but from within one is binding bad karma by spoiling his intent.
Param Pujya Dadashri explains with the help of an example.
“Suppose you and four of your friends have travelled to this city from a village; but cannot find accommodation anywhere because you arrive very late. You tell your friends that you have a friend that lives in the city and that he may be able to put all of you up for the night.
You arrive at this friend’s house at around 11:30 pm and you knock on the door. Your friend first sees only you; and then realizes that you are not alone, but there are five of you. Is he likely to tell you to go back when he sees the five of you? Of course not. Instead he is courteous and invites you all inside. Your friend would welcome you and make you comfortable. But what would he be thinking in his mind? He is thinking, ‘What on earth are they doing here so late in the night?’ That inner intent (bhaav) is what binds karma.
There is no need for him to do that. The visitors have come to him because of a pending karma, and they will stay as long as the karma remains. Once the karma is over, they will leave. But through his internal bhaav, he has created a new karma.”
Is there no way to improve our intent, once spoilt?
There certainly is! Param Pujya Dada Bhagwan shows us the way.
“Now if one were to ask me what he should do for the intent he spoiled, I would tell him to seek forgiveness from whichever God he believes in. If you ask for forgiveness and vow not to repeat the mistake again, that new karma will be erased immediately.” It is like changes in a letter you’ve written are possible only until it is not mailed. Once the letter is mailed (you have left this life), it is no longer in your hands. The karma has been bound then.
Thus, we can erase all our mistakes of this life, before we leave this body:
•by confessing our mistake before whichever God we believe in,
•asking for forgiveness for our mistake, and
•vowing before God to not repeat the mistake again.
Good or bad, karmas are after all karmas
The shackle of good karma is made of gold and the shackle of bad karmas is made of iron. Both prevent liberation because both are shackles after all.
When new karmas are created, we have to wait to reap its consequences. They will not let us go and that is why they are said to be obstructive. In case of the consequences of past karma, we merely have to suffer them and move on.
So the consequences of karma is not the problem, the sowing of new seeds of karma is the problem. On the path to liberation, if one ceases to sow new seeds, the fruits of past karmas will come and leave. And the Soul is then liberated. Hence, once the karma ceases to bind, that is the end.
How do karmas cease to bind?
We bind new karmas due to our basic incorrect belief of, “I am Chandubhai (you may insert your own name here) and I did this.” However, we cannot change this belief on our own!
It is only with the grace of the Enlightened One that this belief can be really changed. Just like only a lit candle lights another candle. Hence, we require a Living Gnani, who with his divine powers, can destroy our deluding karmas and instill within us the right belief of, “I am a Pure Soul.” (makes us attain Self-Realization). Gnani gives us the awareness of who we are and also bestows upon us the right knowledge of what makes all this happen. Thereafter, in the shelter of Gnani, as we keep following his words, we stop binding new karma and start getting liberated from old karma; and eventually we become free from this cycle of seed and fruit of karma forever!!
To conclude,
Whether one is suffering from perpetual ill-luck or is born with a silver spoon in his mouth this life, it doesn’t matter as much, for it is a result of past karmas. What matters today is that one meets the Living Gnani and attains Self-Realization at the earliest, for it liberates us forever...

Ambalal M. Patel was a civil contractor by profession. In June 1958, spontaneous Self-Realization occurred within Ambalal M. Patel. From this point on, Ambalal became a Gnani Purush, and the Lord that manifest within him became known as Dada Bhagwan. A Gnani Purush is One who has realized the Self and is able help others do the same. Param Pujya Dada Bhagwan used to go from town to town and country-to-country to give satsang (spiritual discourse) and impart the knowledge of the Self, as well as knowledge of harmonious worldly interactions to everyone who came to meet him. This spiritual science, known as Akram Vignan, is the step-less path to Self-realization.
