Good morning! How has your morning kicked off? I will admit to you that this morning I have woke up on the ’wrong side of the bed’.

For reasons I am not sure of, I was up and down throughout the night, the alarm went off multiple times beginning at 5:30 a.m., and I laid there through multiple snooze buttons considering my options of pulling the covers over my head or getting up and facing the day. I chose the latter. I had to. I have employees, prospects, partners, and clients counting on it. I also have several business meetings and deadlines to ’show up’ for before the day ends.

Waking up on the wrong side of the bed is not an option; productivity and success is! As business owners, an unproductive day could be the difference between successfully closing the deal, meeting that deadline or even completing a big task, versus not making money and possibly payroll this month. Not making money is not an option.

The reality however is we do have restless nights sleep causing us to wake up to headaches or exhaustion. Therefore immediate acknowledgement of the issue is key and finding a solution and working through it is critical. Again, your employees, partners, vendors, and clients are counting on it!

What do I do to work through these low mornings and turn them into productive days?

As I wake up and realize that my mood and energy is less than optimal, I hit the snooze button the first time and commit to a time that I will be up and moving, no excuses! Before the next snooze button I assess what is swirling in my head, my attitude and my body, and work to understand what is draining me. By the time the next alarm goes off I have identified the source(s) and determined what I can do to overcome the drain. When the last snooze alarm goes off I am out of bed and into the shower continuing to work myself out of the mood that could sabotage a very prosperous day.

Once out of the shower and close to being ready to tackle the day, I maintain my daily routine; going right to my laptop to do my Twitter, LinkedIn, and Blog (which is planned for 30 minutes each morning). The blogging I do each morning get my juices and creativity flowing, helping when needed to get out of a bad mood or low energy level. I then review my daily schedule and pay close attention to the value and benefit that the activity I have scheduled will have on my business now or in the future. This review in itself creates a great deal of energy, showing the potential revenue, clients, projects, and new leads I could be gaining as a result of getting up and facing the day (versus pulling the covers back over my head). Lastly, I have a set of affirmations and quotes that I use for various situations, whether it be low moods, negative thoughts, motivations, psyching myself up, generating energy, and more. On a day like this one, I focus on a quote from Norman Vincent Peale’s “The Power of Positive Thinking” - “A person who is self-reliant, positive, optimistic, and undertakes his work with the assurance of success magnetizes his condition.” Author not disclosed. That quote provides focus and purpose for me……. Then I simply get myself moving directly into the day. Movement is a huge part of a changing attitude, mood, and energy.

So, the next time your alarm clock goes off and you want to pull the blankets back over your head, take a few minutes to identify the source, find a solution for it, repeat one or two affirmations appropriate to your state, and then simply get moving toward your day, your life and your prosperity. You will thank yourself at the end of the day for doing so, I promise!
