Qurbani or sacrifice is the great virtue associated with the Hajj month. The Muslims sacrifice animal on the 10th Zill Hijjah. These sacrifices are made in the memory of Ibrahim A.S and the Ismail A.S. Slaughtering the animal is the important part of the Hajj also. The Muslims, during the Hajj, on the 10th Zill Hijjah, after throwing pebbles on the Satan statue in the Mina, go to sacrifice the animal.
The time for offering the slaughter starts after the Eid prayer on the day of Eid al-Adha and closures when the sun sets on the 13th of Zill-Hijjah. So there are four days of sacrifice: the day of Eid al-Adha and the consequent three days after it.
It is ideal to rush to offer the slaughter after the Eid supplication to Allah (Eid Prayer), as the Messenger (peace be upon him) used to do, then the first thing he would consume upon the arrival of Eid would be meat from his slaughtered animal.
Imam Ahmad reported that Buraydah (R.A) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) didn't go out upon the arrival of (Eid) al-Fitr until he had eaten, and he didn't eat upon the arrival of (Eid) al-Adha until he returned, then he would consume of his slaughtered animal.
Al-Zaylai described in Nasb al-Raayah (2/221) that Ibn al-Qattaan classed it as Saheeh.
Shaykh Ibn 'Uthaymeen said in Ahkaam al-Udhiyah, concerning the time for offering the slaughters:
It is from after the Eid prayer on the 10th Zill Hijjah, which is the day of sacrifice, until the sun sets on the final one of the days of al-tashreeq, which is the thirteenth of Zill-Hijjah. So there are four days to sacrifice the animals: the day of Eid after the petition to God, offering of Eid prayer, and three days after that. Whoever slaughter the animal before the Eid prayer is held, or after the sun sets on the thirteenth, his offering is not legitimate … however in the event that he has a reason for deferring it until after the times of al-tashreeq, for example, if the animal of sacrifice run away with no carelessness on his part, and he didn't discover it until after the time was over, or when he assigned somebody to do it for his sake and his representative overlooked until the time was over, then there is nothing off with offering the sacrifice after the time has finished, in light of the fact that there is a reason, by similarity with the way that one who rests and misses a Fard prayer or forgets it ought to offer the prayer when he awakens recollects that it.
It is admissible to offer the sacrifice by night or by day, yet it is better by the daytime, and the day of Eid after the two khutbahs is the best time. Every day is superior to the accompanying day, on the grounds, that is hurrying to do great.
It says in Fataawa al-Lajnah al-Daa'imah (11/406):
The times of sacrificing for pilgrims performing qiraan or tamattu', and for offering the slaughter (udhiyah) are four: the day of Eid and the three days after that. The time for slaughter finishes when the sun sets on the fourth day, as per the soundest scholarly assessment.
