The Nodal axis is a very important part of your Birth Chart because it gives insights into your past and future. Although the North Node points to new growth, challenges and possibilities, the South Node can hold a lot of your natural talents and abilities. The South Node shows an imbalance because we have focused much on this area of life which is shown by the house placement. The sign gives information about our innate traits.
The South Node can also be our safe haven; somewhere we naturally retreat or resonate toward. To stay in safety mode offers nothing but stagnation and complacency. However, we all need a harbor to anchor into.
The South Node Represents our Past
By past I refer to past lives, or you could look at this as inherited family traits.
The South Node stores a lot of our past attitudes, beliefs and abilities that you need to become more aware of. There will be a lot of skills and talents tied up in this Node, which can be useful to you. It is true when balanced with your North Node they will be more positively expressed; however, realizing you have these assets could encourage you to develop them further.
The North Node often acts like a magnet that attracts opportunity and other people into your life.
The South Node is often neglected in favor of the North Node, which because it offers new growth it is still to be tried and tested. However, a deeper look and assessment of your South Node would be useful. This is like going down into the cellar and finding an old suitcase full of interesting stuff that you had forgotten. It could bring up old memories; give greater understanding of both your innate qualities and talents.
I know of quite a few people who have no planets in a sign only the South Node, yet exhibit the sign’s traits. Those with South Node in the first house will have some strong Aries attributes, yet may not have any Aries planets. They will be led into the seventh house arena probably by partnerships but considering others will be a strong theme in their life. The same applies to South Node in the fourth house; they may well have good nurturing quality and have home making skills, yet Cancer is not prominent in their chart.
The Nodal axis is always important, but search for the treasures in your South Node! How can they be used in developing the attributes of the opposite sign and how can they be expressed in the area of life to which your North Node points? The scales will be weighed down in your South Node area but there will be lots you can use, which you may not be aware of.
Planets conjunct this Node can make you complacent, but used from fresh insight would give a more positive expression of this planets energy relevant to your life’s purpose.
Example:
Mars in Libra conjunct Lisa’s South Node, which held her back from starting her own business, because she felt too many people needed her, together with lack confidence of doing something on her own. Her sense of worth was wrapped up in being useful and valuable to others. Opportunity came when she came involved in a charity organization. She quickly took on the role of leader in raising resources and has pioneered new successful ideas that continue to keep the charity running. Lisa is still using Mars in helping others but finds great satisfaction in being a main player in her team.
A planet conjunct a South Node, can be so ingrained it would be hard to change the way you use it. However, life’s evolutionary process usually helps you with this task.
To illustrate this meaning here is an example.
Lynn has Pluto conjunct her South Node in the 4th house in Leo. She ruled the roost and was queen bee within her large family and social environment. Happy to be a big fish in a small pond, life began to play its part. In the tenth house she became a small fish in a big pond and she found it hard to fit in. She had to compete with others who either had bigger egos or would not allow her sense of authority to rule. She had to learn to become a team player and not be the head of it. This has been a hard for Lynn, but insight of her Nodal axis has helped her to understanding herself. She still has authority issues (Pluto) with others on occasion, but I only need to say ‘ Pluto and Nodal axis’ , which makes her smile. The warmth of her big personality together with her intelligence helps her to work at changing the way her Pluto operates.
To conclude; your South Node may be a place of safety and familiarity and it could hold you back, but look for the treasures it may hold. It will hold a good deal of your assets and talents that may just need the light of awareness to dust them off so you can use them in a new way.
