As a personal trainer , and owner of Every Body's Personal Trainer for over 10 years, I am commonly asked what I think is the most important variable in being successful in fitness as well as in life in general. My answer may surprise you. The most important factor is not your gym, your supplements, your plan, or anything else that you may think. The most important factor in being successful is what I call "the mirror check." (for more info feel free to see us at anchor text

So obviously you're saying what the heck in God's name is the mirror check. Well I have this thing that I do every night before I go to bed and it's called the mirror check. Basically I do everything that I'm supposed to do throughout the day to get everything accomplished, I then brush my teeth and do all my nighttime prep, and then once everything is done I look at myself in the mirror. I'm not looking in the mirror to check my body, my face, or anything else superficial. I look in the mirror into my eyes and I ask myself "have I done everything in my power to be more successful and further along in my life today?  Have I done everything in my power to become better?" As long as I can look myself in the face and say yes, then I'm able to fall asleep and fall asleep easy.

I recommend that everybody try this, and if you find that the answer is no you need to go back to the drawing board and figure out why the answer is no. Your competition each day should not be your friends, nor your family, and it shouldn't even be your business or personal competition. The person that you should be striving to be better than is the person than you were yesterday. You should be doing everything in your power to always be progressing and moving forward.

I had a client the other day say that they were happy with their progress in their fitness program and that they were interested in just maintaining. What I said to that client was, there is no such thing as maintaining. You are either progressing or you're getting worse. None of us ever stay the same in fitness, or in life in general. You're either moving up the ladder or down the ladder.

So my advice to all of you reading this is to perform the mirror check every night. Look yourself square in the eyes and ask yourself did you work hard today, did you do everything in your power to be successful? Did you outwork the person that you were yesterday and are you moving forward? I hope that the answer is yes.
