So you’ve been trying to eat right and to work out every day for the past four months. But you still can’t lose those last 10 pounds. You always try to be creative and diligent at work but your company is still going bankrupt. You always seek to spread as much love and positivity into the world, but they’re still people shooting other people who don’t share the same skin color or the same ideologies as them. And so, you find yourself losing your hair to frustration and annoyance.

Unfortunately, if you’re not careful with the way you handle your moments of fury, you can find yourself making regrettable decisions and doing things that would later make you curse yourself. So how can we learn to deal with frustration? Here are a couple of helpful tips

1. Understand That You Cannot Control Everything

One of the main reasons why we get frustrated is because we carry around too specific ideas about what we want to happen in our lives and how we want our efforts to bear fruits. We have the unrealistic desire to control everything. And when our lives don’t match the rewards we expected from our efforts, we get extremely frustrated. What we ought to do is to realize that no matter how hard we try, we will never attain full control over our lives. There will always be things happening that we do not wish for. And the things that we do hope to welcome into our lives may not always show up.

2. Focus On What You Can Control

Although there are plenty of things you can’t control, you should realize that you’re still holding the steering wheels of a decent handful of things. You might not always be able to control what your roommate does in your room, but you can control how you react to his or her actions. You might not always be able to control which proposals your company’s board of directors chooses to endorse, but you can always control the level of diligence you put into your work regardless of their decisions. Instead of letting yourself get frustrated by putting your magnifying glass on what you cannot control, focus on what you have a little agency over and aim to control those things to the best of your abilities.

3. Learn To Bend With The Wind

When things don’t go your way, it isn’t always the trumpet call for doom. Sometimes the obstacles that we encounter are merely there to guide us to our goals through a much better and more eventful path if we choose to let them lead us. Get into the habit of doing the best that you can with the situation you find yourself in instead of always trying to change things. Instead of letting a cauldron of frustration boil up inside you when things don’t turn out your way, decide that you’re going to think in terms of possibilities and solutions and make diamonds out of the coal you find in your hands. Decide that instead of trying to stand against the wind and breaking down in the process, you’re going to bend with it and survive.

For as long as we have breath in our lungs, we will fail to achieve or change certain things. And in such situations, we will always have the choice of either letting our frustration lead us to regrettable actions, or controlling ourselves and continuing to pursue the life we wish for, even if it’s by through winding paths.
