Ayurveda, Unani and Yoga have been known to treat diverse diseases as well as preventing numerous disorders since time immemorial. It has also been observed that alternative treatment methods are steadily gaining ground as people are becoming more and more aware of the harmful effects of chemically formulated drugs. But what exactly are Ayurveda, Unani and Yoga? And how scientifically authentic are they? Let’s find out.
More than a mere system of treating illness, Ayurveda is a science of life (Ayur = life, Veda = science or knowledge). Ayurveda describes three fundamental energies that govern our inner and outer environments: movement, transformation and structure. Known in Sanskrit as Vata (Wind), Pitta (Fire) and Kapha (Earth), these primary forces are responsible for the basic characteristics of our mind and body.
For each element, there is balance or imbalance in expression. When Vata is balanced, a person is lively and creative but when there is too much movement in the system, a person tends to experience anxiety, insomnia, dry skin, constipation and has difficulty in completing his daily tasks. When Pitta is functioning in a balanced manner, a person is warm, friendly, disciplined, a good leader and a good speaker. When the fire element is out of balance, a person tends to be compulsive, irritable and may suffer from indigestion or an inflammatory condition. When Kapha is balanced, a person is sweet, supportive and stable but when it is out of balance, a person may experience sluggishness, weight gain and sinus congestion. The goal of Ayurveda is to identify a person's physical status in relation to these three basic elements and to determine whether they are imbalanced. Accordingly, the specialists offer treatment using proper diet, herbs, massage therapy, and meditation to re-establish the balance of these three elements.
Unani
Unani System of medicine, as the name suggests, owes its origin to ancient Greece. In India, the Arabs had introduced the Unani system of medicine and soon it had found its roots in the soil.
The Unani system is based on the Hippocratic theory that a perfect balance of "Arkan" (elements), "Akhlat" (humour) and "Mijaz" (temperament) helps to keep the body and mind healthy. Every individual has an inherent power of self-preservation called the 'Quwat-e-Modabira'. The theory presupposes the presence of humours in the body- "Dum" (blood), "Balgham"(phlegm), "Safra" (yellow bile) and "Sauda" (black bile). This system aims at restoring the equilibrium of various elements and faculties of the human body. It has laid down six essential prerequisites for the prevention of diseases. These essentials, known as 'Asbab-e-Sitta-Zarooriya', are Air; Food and Drink; Body Movement and Repose; Mental Movement and Repose; Sleep and Wakefulness; Retention and Evacuation.
Treatment in the Unani system of medicine is done mainly through diet control for simple diseases in the initial stages followed by the administration of a single drug. However, if it fails, compound preparations may be administered. The various treatments are "Ilaj-bit-tadbeer" (Regimental therapy), "Ilaj-bit-dawa" (Pharmacology therapy) and "Jarahat" (Surgery). In Pharmacology therapy, experts use naturally occurring drugs, mostly herbal.
In Sanskrit, the term “Yoga” stands for “Union”. A yogi's ultimate aim is to be able to attain this union with the Eternal Self through certain mental and physical exercises. The growing popularity of Yoga globally confirms that yogic exercises keep one fit at the level of both, body and mind.
Benefits of Yoga:
i) Improves flexibility
ii) Increases lubrication of joints, ligaments and tendons
iii) Massages all the organs of the body
iv) Provides complete detoxification
v) Tones the muscles
vi) Harmonizes the mind and body
A Yoga expert would generally recommend a combination of asanas, pranayamas, meditation, etc. to address the patient’s ailments as well as improve their overall health and well-being.
