The trends of breast vs. formula feeding have certainly changed throughout time, but modern science concludes that there are several benefits to breast-feeding rather than to give your baby formula. Prior to the 18th century, the only source of nourishment for newborn babies was breast milk. Because of the rise of hospital births at the turn of the 20th century in America, breast-feeding declined. The trend however reversed after the 1970's, where just more than half of all mothers were again choosing to nourish their babies with breast milk.
Breast milk is filled with nutritional elements such as vitamins and minerals that cannot adequately be replaced. The nourishment provided by breast milk provides the necessary protein, fat and carbohydrates that improves the overall health of the newborn and mother. Infant-formula companies often devalue the quality of breast milk to ultimately compete in the market place. But once analyzed, you will see there is no comparison if you want the most natural and healthy food for your baby.
The benefits of breast milk are almost limitless. For mothers breast milk: lengthens birth intervals, contracts the uterus, converses iron stores, reduces risk of breast cancer, helps with bone density, and ultimately saves the mother from spending a lot of money on store-bought formula. For infants it: provides a balance of nutrients, protects against chronic disease, provides hormones that promote development, improves cognitive development, protects against infections, reduces the risk of sudden infant death syndrome, reduces the likelihood of food allergies, and introduces a variety of food flavors.
Breast feeding is recommending for at least the complete first year of an infant's life by the American Academy of Pediatrics. One of the most beneficial additions to breast feeding your newborn is the bonding experience you and your baby will make.
