Ask yourself the following question:
What would I do if I had no fear?
Take a few minutes and think about your answer to this question. Think about your feelings and your reactions to this question.
If you have a situation on which you haven’t taken action, ask yourself why you haven’t taken action.
Is it because you are afraid? Are you afraid of what others will think, what others will say? Are you afraid of failure, of success?
The knee-jerk reaction for most people is to say...I can’t do that or I can’t say that, when really they are just experiencing fear about speaking up or taking some new action step that is out of their comfort zone.
You can use this question when making really big changes in your life like quitting your job or leaving a relationship, but I would like to encourage you to apply it to small things you hesitate to do.
Use this question when you need to speak up for yourself, when you need to ask for directions or when you need to ask for help.
What would I do or say if I had no fear?
This question can help you release your fear of looking or sounding stupid, embarrassing yourself or being rejected. This question can empower you to decide what you want to do instead of focusing on what you are afraid of doing.
I use this question when I have to step out of my comfort zone and find myself hesitating and telling myself I can’t do that.
I use this question when I am afraid to go into new social situations and don’t know what to say or don’t know who will be there.
If I have been procrastinating about taking action on some project because I don’t think I have the time, I stop and ask myself... What would I do if I had no fear? Often times I find I have some hidden fear under my lack of action.
“If you are never scared, embarrassed or hurt, it means you never take chances.” Julia Soul
Action Challenge
The next time you catch yourself hesitating or procrastinating about saying or doing something. Stop and ask yourself...
What would I do if I had no fear?
Ask yourself:
What would I like to do in this situation?
What would I like to say in this situation?
What is really stopping me: a real fear, or something in my imagination?
“Every situation presents us with an opportunity to automatically react or consciously respond: a choice point. The more aware we are, the more choices we have; the less aware, the fewer choices.” Eric Allenbaugh PhD Wake Up Calls
