Do you long to live a happy and more fulfilling life? If you do, you're not alone. To live a life happiness and self fulfillment is one of the fundamental quests we all share in.

Over the course of my own journey through life, I've come to believe that there are seven fundamental steps anyone can follow which will immediately lead to more happiness and a greater feeling of self purpose and meaning. In this article, I'm going to focus on the third of these seven steps to happiness.

Happiness Step 3: Protect Your Vibration

In very simplistic terms, we are energetic beings and we emit a vibration or frequency at all times. The vibration we emit is either positive or negative based on our underlying emotions and feelings.

So when we're thinking, we're choosing thoughts that are either positive or negative. When we're speaking, we're choosing language which is either positive or negative. When we are listening, we're formulating responses in thought, words, and actions which are either positive or negative.

Because we're energetic beings, we're also highly responsive to the environment around us. So what do you suppose then is the typical outcome if we find ourselves continuously subjected to negative energy and messages?

Point 1: Realize Negativity is All Around You

For better or worse, your day to day environment is typically framed within a nonstop onslaught of negative messages.

The news is almost exclusively about bad and tragic things that have happened, are happening, or will happen - whether it's crime, the economic crisis, terrorism, war, disease or death. Commercials for most products are deliberately designed to convince you that you have a problem only this product can solve. Talk radio airwaves are flooded with obsessive complaining and gossiping about everything that is wrong with society and the world. Headlines scream out at you.

How can any of this negative onslaught possibly help you to feel good? Is it in any way supportive of you experiencing more happiness or joy or a sense of fulfillment in your life?

Of course not.

So what then is the solution? If you accept that such an ongoing bombardment of negativity is harmful to your happiness, how do you go about guarding your vibration?

Point 2: Learn To Just Turn It Off

My wife Michelle and I noticed something interesting whenever we went on vacation. Typically, while on vacation we'd break from our normal routine and wouldn't be watching or paying attention to the news. We had better things to do, like enjoying ourselves and so typically we'd spend very little time or attention on what was going on in the world. And we'd feel great.

Then, when we'd return home, we'd slowly get drawn into conversations. "Did you hear about ...?"

And we'd begin to feel our vibration sliding back to negativity. Finally, it dawned on us that it was the tone of the messages that we were hearing all the time that was having the impact on how we felt. That's when we realized we could break the routine by simply turning the stuff "off".

The simplest way to guard your vibration, which will instantly help you to feel better and raise your overall happiness baseline it to turn off the pipeline of negativity around you. Turn off the radio. Skip the newspaper headlines. Turn off the television.

When you take these few simple actions, you eliminate the vast majority of the toxic messaging that feeds your unhappiness. You'll start feeling better and begin having more fun because you are effectively guarding your vibration.

Does this sound too simplistic to you? Try it.
