When many people think about elderly care, they automatically assume that all facilities are like institutionalized nursing homes. While dependent patients may require the additional attention that elders at a nursing home receive, this type of setting was deemed no longer acceptable to the average family right around the time of the inception of assisted living in the late 1970's. Since its inception, assisted living facilities and the support offered has come a long way. Here are just four ways modern assisted living facilities have evolved.

Assisted Living Has Become a Mainstream Option

Before assisted living was created, custodial care was given in a very institutional-like setting. There were shared bathrooms, communal showers and very little privacy for residents. As assisted living facilities were built, many of the facilities were ran by small companies who would offer health-related services and the option to socialize but offered people the privacy they wanted.

For years, assisted living was not the mainstream option for elders because there were not many facilities to choose from and the capacity was almost always filled. Now, since the number of larger corporate facilities has grown, it has become a mainstream option for the growing aging population. The population who needs assistance and supervision but does not require the intensive medical care that those in skilled nursing homes need can find their place in these modern facilities.

Geared Towards All and Not Just the Wealthy

In the past, only families who had the money to pay high monthly fees could receive care at an assisted living center. Because many could not privately pay, many had to resort to receiving care in the home or in custodial environments. Now there is a Medicaid program in place that helps elders pay for assisted living services like those offered at Alpine Manor Home for Adults by waiving some social security payments. The Medicaid program and long-term care insurance programs have made it possible for many to go to these facilities instead of only the wealthy.

Promotion of Holistic Wellness

The healthcare amenities that are offered at the most reputable centers are also changing. In the past, facilities would have a small nursing department that simply administered medications and supervised patients. Now, the facilities are becoming communities that are taking a new holistic approach to wellness to improve the quality of life of the residents. It is not out of the norm for a facility to offer exercise, massage, rehabilitation, and therapeutic services.

The Use of High-Tech Tools

As new technology is developed, it changes the way people receive care. Assisted Living Facilities (ALFs) are much safer than they were because they are equipped with real-time sensors that notify nurses when someone may need help. The communities are also being wired with computing technology so that seniors can stay connected. These features allow seniors to living independently and socially while still staying safe and up-to-date with the latest gadgets and apps.

These are just four examples of the evolution of Assisted Living Facilities. With new health and wellness options, high-tech tools and a different way to fund living in one, it is no wonder why ALFs are outnumbering other elderly care facilities.
